Background: A software development company wanted to improve the performance capabilities of their product. Their Java developers and Application Server Administrators had been very successful in tuning middle tier processing. They wanted to achieve the same level of improvement from their database tier. They contacted us to help them analyse the SQL code and database design.

Summary of solution: We performed an analysis of all database activity and recommended changes which would reduce the workload of the database. Overall there was an increase of 70% in transaction throughput by the application.

Workflow - how we got to the solution:

The Client contacted us and explained their requirements. They were running a J2ee application running on JBoss and connecting to an Oracle 9i database.
	We sent the client a script to enable logging of database activity, and asked them to run their application at full load for a few hours.
The Client ran the application at full load for a two hours and sent us the database logging files.
	From the logs we could pinpoint SQL statements that could be improved - the queries that were taking the longest time. With this information we setup a call with the development team. We presented them with a list of problems areas and possible options, detailing the expected impact and development effort. We advised how we could assist on these solutions and that our charge would be no more than 40 hours work.
The client agreed and nominated a developer to work with us.
	Over the next nine days, we provided fixes for each of the problem points. The overall goal was to reduce database activity, and the solution involved changes to SQL, changes to schema, and changes to the application logic.
The Client re-ran the original test and found that 70% more transactions could be processed per hour.
